Xavier, Ohio Northern Advance in NCAA Men's Soccer

Thursday night, Luke Spencer scored in the 86th minute for the game’s only score as Xavier defeated Kentucky 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament at Lexington, Ky.

After the victory, its first ever in tournament play, Xavier travels Sunday to Bloomington, Ind., to face Indiana in a second-round match beginning at 1 p.m.

In the Division III men’s tournament, Ohio Northern plays a third-round game Saturday against Susquehanna (Pa.) in San Antonio, Texas. ONU advanced by winning two games last weekend in Pittsburgh: first, a 1-0 win over Thomas More (Ky.), then a 3-0 triumph over the host team, Carnegie Mellon.

Defending champion Ohio Wesleyan lost its first-round match in overtime to Centre (Ky.), 2-1.

Notre Dame lost its second-round match 3-2 to Rockhurst (Mo.) in the NCAA Division II tourney, after defeating Drury (Mo.) 3-0 in its opening game.

In women’s NCAA tournament play, Ohio Northern was ousted by host team Carnegie Mellon 1-0 in the tournament’s second round last Saturday. In Friday’s first-round game, ONU tied RIT (N.Y.) 1-1 and advanced by winning a penalty kick shootout 4-2. Wittenberg’s women lost in the first round to Wisconsin-Whitewater, 4-0, Nov. 9 at Wheaton, Ill.

In the NAIA tournament, on Saturday night Rio Grande's men's team hosts Aquinas (Mich.) at 6:30 p.m. in first-round action.
